This work of the North African Caelius Aurelianus (5th century AD) is devoted to the diagnosis, aetiology and treatment of individual diseases. Instead of repeating the well-known doctrines of the medical authorities of the day, such as Hippocrates, he adopts a critical stance. The work also contains accounts of, and quotations from, otherwise non-extant writings of antiquity.
